Instead of a finished text, a story on Riffable is a living, growing thing: - A story is written in **riffs** — short passages. Anyone can continue a story by adding a riff after an existing one. - Riffs can **branch**: from any point, a writer can open an alternative continuation, so a story becomes a tree of **paths** (alternate takes and endings), not a single line. - The community **votes** on riffs. Votes highlight the paths readers love and help the author choose the "main" path. - The story's **owner** curates: they set the story's direction, organize chapters, and decide what gets published. - When a path is ready, the owner **publishes** it as a book chapter. A published book is a frozen snapshot (readable on the web and as EPUB) with per-passage author credits — contributors' names appear in the published book. The source story stays alive and can keep growing after publication. The tone of the product: writing together should feel like a light, playful collective jam ("riff" as in music), with low effort to join — three lines are enough for a first riff. ## Core concepts - **Riff**: the unit of a story; a short prose passage written by a person (or, optionally, by the AI co-writer under a person's direction). - **Path** ("caminho"): a branch of the story tree — one possible way the story goes. Readers can switch between paths while reading. - **Chapter**: stories are organized in chapters; each chapter has its own riff tree. The owner can name chapters and give each one its own direction note. - **Story direction** ("bússola"/compass): a public note from the owner explaining tone, genre and boundaries. Contributors — and the AI — are expected to follow it. There is a story-wide direction and optional per-chapter directions. - **Discussion**: every story has an open discussion space (story-wide and per-riff comments, one level of replies, and polls). - **Worlds**: reusable worldbuilding entities (premise + free-form aspects) created by users; a story can attach a world, which is snapshotted so the world can evolve without breaking older works. - **Characters**: reusable characters with portraits, taglines and relationships (derived from @mentions in their sheets); writers can @mention them in riffs. - **Coauthor**: the built-in AI writing partner. It can continue, draft, revise or enrich text — always under the writer's direction, and human prose is sovereign. AI-generated output is moderated; human content is moderated via reports. - **Books**: published snapshots of a story's chosen path, chapter by chapter, with cover, editorial texts (synopsis, dedication, etc.), author credits per passage, and EPUB export. ## Languages The interface is available in Portuguese (pt-BR), English and Spanish. Every riff is automatically translated into the three languages; readers see the translation with a notice and a link to the original. Published book prose stays in its original language on purpose. ## Accounts and plans - Reading public stories and books requires no account. - Starting a story also works anonymously; an account (Google or email magic link) is needed to save the first riff, vote, comment or branch. - Free accounts include a monthly allowance of AI credits; the Pro plan (https://getriffable.com/pro) raises the allowance and uses a stronger generation model. Payment is handled by Freemius. ## Riffable Escolas A classroom edition for Brazilian schools (Portuguese only, https://getriffable.com/escolas): teachers create classes, students join with a code and PIN, activities run in guided modes, AI use is governed by a school → class → activity policy cascade, and class books can be published with school approval.
